We are currently working on a jump rope unit. We begin with getting the correct size jump rope. Ask your student how we measure for the correct size jump rope. We then practice jumping over a stationary rope, then a swaying rope and then an overhead turning rope.
We also work with short ropes on our own. The first thing we do is to make sure we are holding the handles correctly. I tell the students that the ends of the handle should be by their little finger and the end where the rope comes out should be by their thumb. We then tap the ends of the handles together and if we can see our fingernails then we know we are holding correctly. The verbal cues we use are “Tap, tap. Tug, tug, circle, jump, bounce.” Have your child demonstrate for you. Ask your child to teach you how to do it, this is a great way for them to learn.
